Official Hash Hotel Venue B
(Where we're sending everyone looking for a discount hotel)
Hotel Royal
Missing the smell of cigarette smoke and burns in the drapes?  We have a top-rate "socially-owned" establishment, less than a 10-minute walk from the official hash venue.  In recent years it had a good reputation for at least being clean, though thoroughly out-of-date.  Internet might be available on the ground floor, and mixed reviews of the breakfast, ranging from sufficient to outrage. Not all rooms have AC.  Was VERY close to being the official hash venue.  We guarantee that (other than private apartments--see below) there's no cheaper "proper" hotel option anywhere near the center.
NOTE: This hotel will be featured on the hash map, and there will at least be a few fellow hashers there.

Super-AWESOME, Private Apartments Accomodation
http://djapartmani.webs.com/apartmentss.htm
GREAT prices, and highly recommended by a recent addition to our pack, but you're on your own in terms of determing logistics, and the language level is unknown.  We will say that most of these tend to be in good, central locations near the hash venues.  Generally it seems you get a lot of bang for your buck with these options, especially for 2+.  If you have questions about a particular apartment, feel free to ask -- write beerh3@gmail.com and we'll give an non-binding assesment.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON STAYING IN BELGRADE
  • Registration with the Police upon arrival
    • If you are staying in a hotel -- the staff at reception at Check-In will ask for your passport and hold onto it for a few hours so they can fill out the forms and register you with the police.  This is NORMAL, and YES, your passport is safe.  You can ask for it back the next time you pass through the lobby or the next morning, or a few hours later, when they should have had the time to complete the forms.
    • If you are staying with a DOMESTIC private person -- your host will have to take you within 24 hours to the local police station (to SUP/MUP) in order to register you.  Serbs should know about this.  It is painless and takes 10 minutes, max.  DO NOT avoid this -- better to be safe than sorry.
    • If you are staying with a FOREIGNER private person -- same as above, only not all foreigners are legally allowed to be your host (to be the one to declare your presence here).  The foreigner should know their basis of residence.  Unless they have a permanent residence, then you will likely have to find a Serb friend (landlord, neighbor, employer, etc.) to "sponsor" you and act as your host for the purposes of the police registration.  As long as they have a local's ID number to fill in for the declaration, other details & relationship are not so important.
  • MAKE SURE TO CHECK TO SEE IF A VISA IS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY, based on your nationality
    • Here is a listing of Serbian Embassies/Consulates abroad
    • To many different nationalities, foreigners can enter without having a visa beforehand, and can stay for 90 days on a tourist basis, with multiple entries and exits, provided it does not exceed a total of 90 full days in Serbia in any consecutive 180 day period.
    • If you are traveling on a passport from the EU, the U.S., or (just recently!) Turkey, then you do not need a visa.  For all others, please check (most often, former socialist/communist countries generally are free from visa-requirements as well due to historical ties).
  • SAFETY
    • No problem.  The city is very safe, at all hours -- just watch for purse-snatching, pickpocketing on city buses/trams
  • Currency/Exchange
    • The local currency is the Dinar (RSD).  Plan on the following rates during your stay:
      • 103-110 RSD: 1 EUR
      • 80-85 RSD: 1 USD
    • The best way to get cash in Belgrade is to use your bank/debit card to withdraw RSD from any bankomat/ATM.  This is safe, and the rates are fine.
    • Or, you can change money at the official street vendors, called "Menjacnica"s
      • Most offer 0 fees and have better exchange rates than offered by the banks
      • Most major currencies are accepted, though not necessary neighboring currencies.  Plan to bring EUR to exchange (not HUF for example -- but this will be checked and updated).
